Votes and glory and money to gain.

Let us woo them, screw them and jail them
And make money when we bail them!

Their hopes, their struggles, agonies and successes
Get us grants and consulting fees.
Celebrate their stereotypes and what holds them down,
In our academic gowns
As we celebrate and toast our government grants
At our annual conference pontificating our research rants!

Life is a Terminal Disease!

To live today is a risky deal.
If a superbug won’t get you,
the bird flu will!
You go to hospital and soon you reel
in a bed full of Clostridium difficile!
And if you go out of doors a mosquito will
give you the virus from West Nile!
You leave the hospital and you think you are O.K.
Only to find that you acquired MRSA!
For some companionship you make a spiel
only to find that now you got HIV
and now if the TB won’t get you
the terrorists will!
Only one thing certain is
life is a terminal disease!

What good is a safe food supply that kills people and makes them sick?
What good is a nutritious food supply that caused the obesity crisis?
What good are safe cities where people get killed or mugged?
What good are facts, evidence and documentation if they don’t support our preconceived notions?
Why does the Department of Agriculture grow bigger in the city the fewer farmers are in the country?
What good is leadership when it comes as leadershit?
What good are extraordinary people when they act so ordinary?
What good are VIP’s if they act like VIA’s?

It's a screwed up world!

No-one likes to be screwed by anyone at any time for any reason
but everyone is out to screw everybody at all times
and everybody wants to be screwed by someone some time
and if no-one screws anybody at any time
then soon there won't be anybody to screw anybody at any time!

On bullshit, bullshitting, bullshitters and sycophants

This is a serious discussion based on the scholarly definition of bullshit in the 2005 nonfiction US best selling book by Princeton University professor emeritus Harry Frankfurt - On Bullshit (see http://press.princeton.edu/titles/7929.html ; http://www.slate.com/id/2114268/ ). It is often difficult to decide whether statements are lies, bullshit or if one is dealing with sycophants doing what they think they ought to do.

Screw-upitis!!!!!!

It seems to me that most bureaucratic organizations or countries have a natural rhythmic cycle that can be defined as follows:

First some make money by screwing-up - screw-upitis or better f***-upitis;
this is followed by income generting activity called inquiryitis;

This is followed by checkeritis - and then they often hire a checker to check that the checker checked that the checker checked if the checker checked that ....... forgetting to hire anybody to do the work that the checkers were going to check!

New mission statement for public health agencies:
To play nicely TOGETHER in the sand box and find ways to tolerate and resolve differing minority regulatory science opinions (the approach of the supreme court should be considered);
TO BE HUMBLE by remembering the many regulatory-scientific misadventures in our past, e.g., the blood crises, the Vioxx paradox, SARS farce, the ongoing superbug crisis (add any number of other examples) and to reflect that mad cow disease is perhaps the greatest regulatory-scientific misadventure, amounting to the ultimate doctors’ dilemma and vegetarians’ worst nightmare because of the potential broad impact on foods, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics and other bovine sourced consumer products ......
To work cooperatively and transparently with all fellow Canadian citizens to maximize the health impact of the public health resources being spent;
To resist creating false expectations by making promises we know we can’t keep;
To resist wasting precious public health resources by working in redundancy or reinventing the wheel (mapleleafing) and by fostering progress by adopting or importing innovations that exist elsewhere;
To accept full responsibility for the regulatory-scientific misadventures the same way we celebrate regulatory-scientific successes;
To recognize that spin doctoring and "lience" have no place in public health science;
To admit that we may not have all the answers all of the time and that our answers are not the only possible answers; and to never again pronounce that "The review process is sound, rigorous and based on the best available scientific information and we can be confident in our conclusions." ..... IT’S A TIME TO BE HUMBLE!
